With National Suicide Prevention Month (September) approaching, we are highlighting artists who have taken the brave step of speaking on the taboo subjects of mental health, trauma, and coping with mental illness in their music. Wav, an artist who in his music openly speaks on his disturbing past and his battles with mental health, has just released a two song project entitled “For The Victims” that both brings awareness to mental health and gives a raw, unfiltered look into the world of someone who is battling mental illness.
On the first track of the project, “Borderline Personality Disorder (Freestyle)” Wav gives a very unrestrained and intense look into how it feels to live life constantly battling mental illness. The song pairs catchy melodies and sparsely processed vocals with compelling lyrics that tell the story of the artists struggle with Borderline Personality Disorder, a serious mental illness characterized by pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior. This disorder often causes a pattern of unstable relationships which Wav also touches on in the track.
The second song “Emergence/177013” displays utter desperation and a literal cry for help as Wav tells someone to “come find me please” and save him from the turmoil that comes with living with a mental illness. Having struggled with a childhood of financial struggles, poor physical health and a volatile upbringing Wav has been the victim of many circumstances that contributed to the frustration related to the decline in his mental health and in this song, Wav really allows listeners to feel the sheer rage that has been built up over the years.
Although Wavs music exhibits pain and desperation, Wav has committed himself to his belief that there are people in the world who are happy to be alive and who do have a desire to find joy. This realization has motivated him to continue to be a positive force and to stay persistent in helping others as well as himself in the fight for mental health.
